Previously we interviewed Flo Heiss, Executive of Dare, London.

In this, our second interview, we speak to Laura Jordan Bambatch, Creative Director of Dare; London, who shares with us how she tries to stay fresh and current in the Creative Industry, and in her role as Creative Director. She also shares some top tips for getting noticed in London’s Creative Industry, calling for people to try out new things, make the most of every opportunity that arises, and to persevere.

What is your name, where do you work and what is your role?

My name is Laura Jordan Bambatch; I’m Creative Director at Dare in London.

How long did it take you get to where you are in your career today?

Erm, I did my first website in 1994, so it’s taken me since the end of 1994, but I feel like I’ve always been working towards the career I have now. And I had my first agency job in about 1999.

What was your first creative job?

My first creative job was as a designer.

As a Creative Director, what does it take to get noticed in London’s creative industry ?

I think to get noticed in the industry; well to start with, you need to be good! You need to be confident, because it’s a big pond to swim in. And you need to have perseverance, be willing to try things out and you need to take opportunities. Put yourself in uncomfortable situations in order to really be successful.

How do you stay fresh and current as a Creative Director?

I guess the main way I stay fresh is by trying to take inspiration from outside of advertising. So, you know, I have an arts practice, which I try to do as much of as possible – though not as much as I’d like to. I go to a lot of exhibitions, I read a lot of books, erm, and I take a lot of inspiration from around me, and spend a lot of time with people that I find really inspiring and interesting. I read a lot of philosophy…anything really to keep my mind working and learning, because I find as long as you are learning something new, then you’re able to make changes and stay fresh.

If you were starting out today, what advice would you give yourself?

Erm, it’s all going to be okay! (Laughs out loud) …I think I’d say to myself, it’s all gonna be okay – don’t worry!

Tell us something we might not know about your agency; Dare, London. What’s it like to work there?

Well, I’m not sure what you don’t know about Dare! I’m quite new myself; I’ve only been there a few months. But it’s fun! I went to Dare to work with an old friend, and to have some fun, joy, and some bubbles in my working life – more than I had previously. You probably shouldn’t put that question in, because I also love my old agency! But, I really thought about what was important to me, and enjoying the moment was important, so that’s why I have ended up there.

And finally, what do you say to the suits, when they say no to you?

I guess the first question I would ask is why, and I would try to understand why it was. I would try to figure out where it’s coming from, and try to manipulate things so that I got my way – in a good way that everyone agreed on!
