What is the role of an Information Architect?

As an Information Architect you will work across the project lifecycle from information gathering, concept development through to producing IA deliverables and quality assurance. The majority of the work will be developing information architecture documentation (site maps, user journeys, navigation models and wireframes) for both websites and applications.

Skills and experience necessary for this role:

An educational background is preferred in human computer interaction (or similar) if you want to work client side or within a consultancy.  If you want to work for an agency, professional experience will be acceptable with no formal education.  However a portfolio of work will be needed.
