A packaging artworker creates designs for clients based on briefs or style guides. It is a fast-paced job – one in which an ability to work under pressure and adhere to deadlines is crucial.

What do packaging artworker jobs entail?

As a packaging artworker, your duties will include applying pack copy to artwork, ensuring brand consistency across a product range and completing the artwork for packaging and labelling. You’ll mostly be working with Adobe Photoshop, as well as Illustrator, InDesign and other common industry standard software.

To become a packaging artworker, you’ll need to demonstrate an ability to produce print-ready artwork and to have a track record of creating engaging designs. This is why it’s important to develop a portfolio. A degree in graphic design will also be required, unless you have extensive industry experience and an impeccable track record.

Other desirable attributes include an understanding of cutter guides plus a general knowledge of the printing process and packaging industry. To become a successful packaging artworker will entail more than creative skills alone however. You’ll need to be highly-motivated, sociable and a good team worker. Senior packaging artworkers will also be expected to have additional skills, including the ability to negotiate with printers and to effectively manage a team of designers.

Working as a packaging artworker can be demanding at times; there may be long hours and tight schedules to accommodate. It is also a rewarding career however, not only financially, but in terms of the satisfaction that comes from creating designs from scratch and seeing these developed through to the print stage.

What salary can I expect as a packaging artworker?

Packaging artworker salaries average around £23K, though juniors will naturally start on less – most likely in the region of £18K per year. With experience, however,  packaging artworkers who ascend to senior positions can expect up to £45K, making this a great profession to pursue.
